Sarawak\u2019s Minister for Modernisation of
\nAgriculture, Tan Sri Dr. Chan has called on all the 28 Area Farmers
\nOrganisation (AFOs) to establish a land bank database.<\/font><\/div>\n

He said this when officiating at the 20th Annual General Meeting Of State Farmer\u2019s Ogranisation, Sarawak in Kuching.<\/font><\/p>\n

He considered it vital for the SFO to have ready
\ninformation on land of respective AFOs areas so that the Sarawak
\nFarmers Organisation (SFO) could facilitate the consolidation of
\nindividual member\u2019s land of economical sizes into economic size for
\nmore viable commercial agriculture projects.<\/font><\/p>\n

Tan Sri Dr. Chan said that he would not want to get
\na negative response from AFOs whenever he enquire if a certain piece of
\nland is a State land or Native land <\/font><\/p>\n

And he mentioned that the AFOs must take stock of
\nindividual members\u2019 resources or assets,hence the important of having
\nsuch a database. <\/font><\/p>\n

Dr.Chan, also said that such database must contain
\nrelevant information such as the location,size,land suitability and
\nstatus of the land to make it easier to gauge the availability of the
\nAFO members\u2019 land available for relevance agricultural or commercial
\ndevelopment.<\/font><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is through this approach that modernized agricultural projects can be implemented expeditiously,\u201dhe stressed.<\/font><\/p>\n

The 28 AFOs in Sarawak represent 147,000 farming
\ncommunities who are also their registered members. The
\nFarmers\u2019Organisation was set up in the Department of Agriculture in
\n1972 with the establishment of its first Area Farmers\u2019 Organisation
\n(AFO) at Stumbin in 1973. Since then,28 AFOs have been established.<\/font><\/p>\n

Literally they are formed by the farmers for the
\nfarmers, and their operations are overseen by their respective board of
\ndirectors who comprise the farmers themselves. SFO meanwhile is the
\numbrella body for all the AFOs.<\/font><\/p>\n
