As it enters the final phase of its \n20-year development plan, Tanjung Manis sheds off its image as a wood \nprocessing zone to emerge as a thriving economic center that can support \nvarious industries.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n
\n<\/div>\n
In the \n1990\u2019s, Tanjung Manis was developed primarily as a wood-processing zone. \nHowever, seeing the potentials of the area to become a major economic hub of \nits own, the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) developed \na 20-year Development Masterplan for Tanjung Manis. It created a subsidiary company, \nthe <\/span>Tanjung \nManis Development Sdn Bhd, to implement the Masterplan in four phases.<\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n
\n<\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span>Upon \ncompletion of its fourth phase of development, Tanjung Manis will emerge as a \nstrategic economic hub for Central Region by the end of 2010.<\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n
\n<\/div>\n
The zone had \nthus far received about RM1.04 billion of investment from STIDC (RM370 \nmillion), the private sectors (RM290 million) and other government agencies \n(RM380 million).<\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n
\n<\/div>\n
Several \ninfrastructure projects that are either underway or are to be implemented for \nthe Central Region of Sarawak under the 9th<\/sup> MP will bring in more \neconomic development to Tanjung Manis.<\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

These \nprojects include the road project linking Sibu and Tanjung Manis) worth RM420 \nmillion. The road spans 43 kilometres, including five bridges, and is expected \nto be completed within five years from 2006.<\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n
\n<\/div>\n
Another \nproject that will be completed by the year\u2019s end is the RM400 million worth \ndeep sea port that will further boost the deep-sea fishing and wood processing \nindustries in Tanjung Manis. Upon completion of the deep sea port, the Rajang \nPort Authority will move from Sibu to Tanjung Manis to fully utilise the deep \nsea port\u2019s capacity.<\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Other \nprojects in the pipeline under the 9th<\/sup> MP include a marina, golf \ncourses, resorts and a special zone for shipbuilding and ship maintenance.<\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

While the \nwood-based industries will remain as the core industry in Tanjung Manis, the \narea is also earmarked for the development of other commercial activities such \nas aquaculture, tourism and agriculture, especially oil palm as the town has \nbeen identified as a raw palm oil accumulation centre for Sibu, Sarikei, Kapit \nand Mukah.<\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n
